What Is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of mechanically reducing a tree stump below ground level using a specialist stump grinder. Rather than excavating the entire root system, the machine gradually removes the timber into small wood chips, leaving the surrounding ground largely undisturbed.
Once completed, the remaining area can often be prepared for turf, planting, paving or construction depending on the depth of grinding required.

Do You Actually Need Stump Grinding?

Many tree companies assume that because a tree has been removed, the stump should also be removed. We do not share that view.

Trees such as hazel and sycamore are well known for producing vigorous regrowth from freshly cut stumps.
Many other species will simply decay naturally over time without producing significant new growth.
Understanding these differences allows us to give practical advice before recommending stump grinding.
Sometimes the most sensible recommendation is simply to monitor the stump rather than remove it immediately.
How Deep Should A Stump Be Ground?
When clients decide to proceed with stump grinding, our usual advice is straightforward.
If you are investing in the work, you may as well achieve the greatest possible benefit.
For this reason we generally recommend grinding to the maximum practical depth of the machine, often around twelve inches below ground level.
This provides greater flexibility for future landscaping and significantly reduces the likelihood of the remaining stump causing future inconvenience.
Where construction is proposed, additional excavation may still be required depending on engineering requirements, but for most domestic situations this depth provides an excellent result.
What Happens To The Grindings?
Whenever possible we prefer to recycle the wood chips directly back into the hole created during grinding.
This is both practical and environmentally responsible.
The material gradually decomposes, returning organic matter to the soil rather than leaving the site unnecessarily.
Should a client prefer complete removal of the grindings, we are equally happy to arrange this.

The client wished to remove six long dead ash stumps before creating a new flower bed.
