Many people imagine a tree inspection is simply someone looking up into the canopy before deciding whether work is required. Professional tree inspections are considerably more involved than that. Its branches reflect years of growth, competition, storms and previous pruning. The signs are all there. The challenge is understanding what they mean.That is what you're really paying for. One of the moments that has stayed with me throughout my career was my very first professional tree inspection.
Until that point, trees had always been something I worked on.
Suddenly, they became something I was responsible for understanding.
The realisation was immediate.
"I didn't notice that."
No longer felt acceptable.
Because now it was my job to notice. Every cavity. Every fungal fruiting body. Every pruning wound. Every subtle change in the canopy. Every crack. Every buttress root. Every target beneath the tree. Every clue that might contribute to understanding what was happening.

Most People Think They're Buying A Liability Waiver
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding tree inspections is that people believe they're purchasing a document that protects them from liability.
A piece of paper that says somebody else has looked at the tree.
In reality, a good tree inspection is much more valuable than that.
It is about preservation. Ecology. Safety. Communication. Legacy. Professional judgement.
Above all, it is about reassurance.
We regularly meet homeowners whose imaginations have understandably run away with them.
"It sways in the wind." "It's much bigger than it used to be." "It lost a branch last winter."
These observations are real. They deserve to be taken seriously. But they don't necessarily mean the tree is dangerous.

The goal of arboriculture is not to eliminate every possible risk.
That would require removing every mature tree.
Instead, our role is to understand that risk, reduce it where appropriate and preserve the remarkable benefits trees provide wherever possible.
Every recommendation we make attempts to balance four things.
The needs of the tree. The needs of the client. The surrounding landscape. The wider ecology. Sometimes those interests align perfectly. Occasionally they compete. Professional judgement lies in finding the right balance. Our philosophy remains remarkably simple. Intervene as little as possible. But as much as necessary.
If we can safely leave a tree exactly as it is, that is our ideal outcome.
How We Begin Every Inspection
One of the questions we're occasionally asked is:
"What exactly are you looking for?"
The honest answer is...
Everything.
Before we focus on individual defects, we begin by stepping back and looking at the tree as a whole.
What species is it?
How large has it become?
How does it sit within the landscape?
When was it last pruned?
Does this appear to be a property where trees have historically been well managed?
Very often, if something significant is wrong, the tree begins telling that story long before we inspect individual features. Sparse foliage. Reduced annual growth. Excessive deadwood. Unusual crown shape.
General vitality. Healthy trees tend to look healthy. (Though not always!)
Declining trees often begin communicating that decline across their entire structure.
Only once we've built that broader picture do we begin our systematic inspection.
Down. In. Up. Out.
One of the most valuable inspection methodologies I was taught can be summarised in four simple words.
Down. In. Up. Out.
It provides a structured approach that ensures nothing important is overlooked.
We begin with the ground. Are there exposed roots? Evidence of soil movement? Fungal fruiting bodies? Compacted ground? Recent excavation? Fallen branches? Signs of disturbance?
Next we move in, examining the root buttresses and lower stem.
This area often contains some of the most important structural information within the entire tree.
From there we work up the stem.
Looking carefully for cracks. Decay. Previous pruning wounds. Included bark. Mechanical damage.
Cavities. Finally, we work out through every major scaffold branch.
Deadwood. Fungal brackets. Co dominant stems. Structural defects. Previous failures.
Progressively, the tree begins revealing its story.
By this stage we're rarely thinking about individual observations anymore.
We're building an understanding.
Only after we've gathered every available piece of information do we begin making recommendations.
One principle has become increasingly important throughout my career.
Don't make a decision and then collect evidence.
Collect the evidence first.
Then make the decision.
That approach has prevented countless assumptions and led to far better outcomes for both our clients and their trees.
Why Experience Changes What You See
One of the fascinating things about arboriculture is that experience doesn't simply teach you more facts.
It changes what you notice.
Walk past a mature tree with somebody who has never studied trees and they'll probably describe its size, its species and perhaps whether it looks healthy.
Walk past the same tree with an experienced arborist and they're often seeing something entirely different.
The architecture of the crown.
The relationship between the buttress roots and the surrounding soil.
Historic pruning. Reaction growth. Included bark. Decay fungi. Previous branch failures. Compaction. Changes in annual growth. Targets beneath the canopy.
It's rather like learning a new language.
At first you simply hear sounds. Eventually you begin understanding the conversation.
That is one of the greatest values of a professional tree inspection.
Not simply recognising features.
Understanding what those features actually mean.
Every Observation Needs Context
One of the easiest mistakes to make when inspecting trees is assuming that one observation tells the whole story.
It doesn't.
Take fungi, for example.
People often assume that finding a fungal fruiting body automatically means a tree is dying.
Sometimes it indicates a significant structural concern.
Sometimes it represents very little immediate risk.
The important question isn't:
"Is there a fungus?"
The important questions are:
Which fungus is it?
Where is it growing?
How large is it?
What species of tree is it affecting?
What is the condition of the canopy?
What targets surround the tree?
Exactly the same principle applies to cavities.
Deadwood.
Co-dominant stems.
Pruning wounds.
Every feature forms part of a much larger picture.
Professional judgement comes from understanding how those pieces fit together.
A Healthy Looking Tree That Was Anything But
One recent inspection reinforced exactly why assumptions can be so dangerous.
We were inspecting a relatively small Ash tree growing beside a busy road in Farningham.
At first glance, the tree looked remarkably healthy.
The canopy was full.
The leaves were vibrant.
Annual growth appeared strong.
It would have been very easy to complete the inspection and move on.
Instead, while carrying out our systematic assessment, we moved a builder's bag that had been resting against the base of the tree.
Hidden beneath it was a substantial Ganoderma bracket fungus.
Further investigation revealed a large cavity extending deep into the lower stem.
Structurally, the tree had been compromised far more severely than its healthy appearance suggested.
Had we relied on first impressions, we could easily have missed one of the most significant defects on the tree.
That inspection reinforced a lesson we return to repeatedly.
Trees deserve thoroughness.
Assumptions have no place in professional arboriculture.
Don't Decide First. Observe First.
One principle guides almost every inspection we carry out.
Never decide what you think is happening before you've gathered the evidence.
Human beings are naturally drawn towards confirming their first impressions.
Psychologists call this confirmation bias.
In arboriculture, it can become surprisingly dangerous.
If you decide a tree is healthy before you've completed your inspection, you'll often begin unconsciously looking for evidence that supports that conclusion.
Exactly the same thing happens if you arrive expecting the tree to be dangerous.
Professional inspections require the opposite mindset.
Collect every available piece of evidence.
Challenge your own assumptions.
Only then should you begin reaching conclusions.
That discipline protects both our clients and the trees entrusted to our care.
Looking Beyond The Tree
One of the biggest lessons experience teaches is that trees rarely exist in isolation.
Almost every issue we encounter has been influenced by something else.
Mechanical damage from vehicles.
Historic pruning.
Construction.
Changing soil levels.
Compaction.
Competition from neighbouring vegetation.
Storm damage.
Drought.
Colonising insects.
Decay fungi.
Even changes in how people use the land around the tree.
The tree itself is usually responding remarkably well.
It is the environment around it that has changed.
Understanding that relationship fundamentally changes how you approach tree inspections.
We're not simply inspecting a tree.
We're inspecting the relationship between that tree and everything surrounding it.
Sometimes the most important clue isn't growing on the tree at all.
Understanding Risk Rather Than Eliminating It
One question we hear regularly is:
"Is my tree safe?"
It's an understandable question.
The truthful answer, however, is more nuanced than many people expect.
Every mature tree carries some degree of risk.
They are large, heavy living organisms responding constantly to a changing environment.
Branches fail.
Storms happen.
Wood decays.
Roots adapt.
The aim of professional tree inspection is not to eliminate every conceivable risk.
Doing that would require removing every mature tree in Britain.
Instead, our role is to understand the level of risk, identify anything that falls outside what we'd reasonably expect and recommend proportionate action where appropriate.
Sometimes that recommendation involves pruning.
Occasionally it involves removing the tree.
Very often it involves monitoring.
Surprisingly frequently, it involves doing nothing at all.
That last recommendation is sometimes the hardest for people to believe.
Leaving The Tree Alone Is Often The Best Outcome
People occasionally assume arborists enjoy recommending tree work.
In reality, our favourite recommendation is often the simplest.
"Leave the tree exactly as it is."
In our experience, slightly more than half of the trees we inspect require no immediate work at all.
That proportion naturally varies depending on the site, the species and the management history.
But it reinforces something we believe strongly.
Trees have been solving biological problems remarkably successfully for millions of years.
Wherever possible, we should allow them to continue doing exactly that.
Our philosophy has always been based on minimal intervention.
If we need to intervene, we ask ourselves one question.
What is the smallest amount of work that achieves the desired outcome while preserving the greatest amount of the tree?
That question guides every recommendation we make.
Because our responsibility isn't simply to manage risk.
It's to preserve remarkable trees for the generations that follow.
Building Confidence Rather Than Fear
One thing we've become increasingly aware of is how much unnecessary anxiety surrounds mature trees.
A large branch falls somewhere else in the country.
A storm appears in the weather forecast.
A fungus is spotted at the base of a trunk.
Suddenly, a tree that has quietly stood for generations begins feeling threatening.
Fear is understandable.
But fear rarely leads to good decisions.
Our aim is never to frighten clients into carrying out work.
Our aim is to replace uncertainty with understanding.
Sometimes that means explaining why a tree genuinely requires attention.
Just as often, it means explaining why ordinary characteristics of an ageing tree are exactly what we would expect to see.
One of the most satisfying moments in our work is watching a client relax after an inspection.
Not because we've told them there is nothing to worry about.
Because we've helped them understand why.
That confidence is every bit as valuable as the inspection itself.
Why Customers Trust Our Recommendations
One of the questions we occasionally ask ourselves after completing an inspection is a simple one.
"If this were our own tree, what would we do?"

By the time we leave your property, we want you to understand not only what we recommend, but why we recommend it. Whether the outcome is immediate work, periodic monitoring or no intervention at all, you should feel informed, reassured and confident in the decision.

They often begin the visit convinced something is seriously wrong, only to discover that the characteristics worrying them are perfectly normal for an ageing tree. There is no single answer. The appropriate inspection interval depends on the species, age, condition, location and the potential consequences of failure. Trees beside busy roads, schools or public spaces generally require more frequent inspection than those in open countryside.
Can you tell if a tree is dangerous just by looking at it?
An experienced visual inspection can identify a great many structural and biological issues. Occasionally, where significant defects are suspected, further investigation or specialist testing may be appropriate. Most of the time, however, a thorough visual inspection provides the information needed to make sensible management decisions.
Does a tree inspection always result in tree work?
No. In our experience, many inspections conclude that no immediate work is required. Our objective is not to recommend work wherever possible, but to recommend only the work that is genuinely necessary.
What happens if defects are found?
That depends entirely on the nature of the defect. Some trees require immediate action. Others may simply benefit from routine monitoring or modest pruning. Every recommendation is proportionate to the level of risk and the long term health of the tree.
Will I receive a written report?
Where requested, yes. The level of detail depends on the purpose of the inspection, from straightforward homeowner advice through to more comprehensive reports.
Can you inspect trees after a storm?
Absolutely. Severe weather is one of the most common reasons people request an inspection. Even where no obvious damage is visible, a professional assessment can provide reassurance and identify defects that may otherwise go unnoticed.
I'm worried about a tree but don't know what the problem is. Should I still arrange an inspection?
Yes. In fact, this is one of the most common reasons people contact us. You do not need to identify the issue yourself. Our role is to investigate, interpret what we find and explain it clearly.
Looking Beyond Individual Trees
Occasionally, a tree inspection answers a much bigger question.
Perhaps a single inspection develops into a long term management plan for an estate. Perhaps repeated inspections identify trends across an entire population of trees. Perhaps development proposals require a more strategic understanding of the landscape.

A Final Thought
One of my favourite moments during an inspection comes right at the beginning.
A client points towards a mature tree and quietly says, "I don't think it looks right."
My first thought is rarely that something must be wrong.
More often it is, "Let's go and see what the tree has to show us."
Sometimes it tells us that intervention is needed.
Sometimes it tells us it simply needs time.
Very often, it tells us it has been coping remarkably well on its own for many years.
That is why we inspect trees.
Not to look for reasons to cut them down, but to understand them well enough to make the right decision.
