Our Philosophy
We Don't Just Work on Trees. We Help Steward a Landscape.
Every day, thousands of decisions are made about trees across the United Kingdom.
Some improve the landscape.
Some preserve it.
Some diminish it forever.
At Southfleet Tree Services, we believe those decisions carry a responsibility that extends far beyond the individual customer standing in front of us.
We believe we are stewards of a great landscape, and its care, at our hands, is crucial.
That belief shapes everything we do.

Tree Surgeons Are on the Front Line
Most people think tree surgery is about climbing, chainsaws and woodchip.
Those things matter.
But they are not what defines our profession.
Every day, tree surgeons stand between development and habitat, between convenience and conservation, between unnecessary removal and thoughtful management.
We are often the first and only professionals a homeowner will ever speak to about the future of a mature tree.
That responsibility should never be taken lightly.
We believe our duty is not simply to carry out instructions.
Our duty is to provide the best advice we can.
Even when that advice means less work for us.
Sometimes the Best Tree Surgery Is No Tree Surgery
One of the proudest moments in our business isn't completing a difficult dismantle.
It's telling a customer they don't need one.
Over the years we've visited countless trees that clients believed were dying.
A branch had fallen.
The canopy looked thin.
The trunk was covered in ivy.
There was deadwood.
Often, none of those things justified removal.
One mature beech tree in Walderslade had suffered extensive squirrel damage and lost several limbs. The owner believed the tree was finished.
It wasn't.
Through selective pruning and sensible management, the tree remains standing today.
Those are the decisions we're proudest of.
Because once a mature tree is gone, centuries of ecological value disappear with it.
We Advocate for the Tree
This surprises some people.
After all, we run a tree surgery company.
But we genuinely believe our role is to advocate for trees whenever it is reasonable and safe to do so.
Healthy trees provide shade.
Store carbon.
Support wildlife.
Reduce flooding.
Improve air quality.
Create places people want to live.
They deserve careful consideration before irreversible decisions are made.
If removal is necessary, we'll explain why.
If management is possible, we'll explain that too.
Our loyalty is to good arboriculture.
Not to generating invoices.
Education Changes Everything
Tree surgery in the UK is an unusual profession.
Formal arboricultural education is not required to start trading.
Many excellent contractors operate without it.
Many do exceptional work.
But we believe deeper understanding leads to better decisions.
That's why Jackson Moran returned to study for a Level 4 qualification in Arboriculture after years in industry.
Because understanding how trees grow, respond to stress, compartmentalise decay and interact with ecosystems changes the way you approach every recommendation.
The chainsaw is only one tool.
Knowledge is another.
The Cheapest Option Is Often the Most Expensive
We understand why people compare quotations.
Trees can represent significant investment.
But when comparing prices, ask yourself one question:
"Am I paying someone to remove a tree, or am I paying someone to make the right decision about that tree?"
Those are not the same thing.
The cheapest contractor may remove a tree that could have been retained.
The cheapest contractor may fail to identify protected wildlife.
The cheapest contractor may create future structural problems through poor pruning.
Good arboriculture isn't measured by how much timber ends up on the ground.
It's measured by whether the intervention was correct.
Ecology Isn't an Add On
Before every project we complete an ecological checklist.
Not because legislation requires us to.
Because responsibility requires us to.
One misconception we regularly encounter is that birds only nest during spring.
They don't.
Protected nests can exist at any time of year.
Likewise, veteran trees often support fungi, insects and mammals that depend on them.
Every tree is part of something larger.
When we work on one, we try never to forget the rest.
Technology Should Serve the Environment
Where practical, we use battery powered equipment.
Not because it's fashionable.
Because quieter machines create less disturbance for neighbours and reduce emissions without compromising professional standards.
Likewise, our green waste is processed through biomass facilities where it can become renewable energy rather than landfill.
Small decisions accumulate.
That's true in ecology.
And it's true in business.
Stewardship Is Older Than Us
One project near Mereworth left a lasting impression on us.
While carrying out routine management around a historic property, the owner showed us centuries old sketches depicting woodland workers tending the estate.
Different people.
Different tools.
The same responsibility.
Looking at those drawings, it became obvious that our work is simply another chapter in a much longer story.
We are temporary custodians.
The landscape is the permanent thing.
Why Southfleet?
The name Southfleet comes from history.
The River Fleet still flows beneath modern London despite centuries of development above it.
Much has changed.
The river remains.
For us, that's a reminder that landscapes adapt, evolve and survive but only if people choose to care for them.
We chose the name because we wanted our business to remain rooted in place, history and stewardship.
Leading the Change
Our ambition has never simply been to become the biggest tree surgery company.
We want to demonstrate what professional arboriculture can look like when ecology and expertise sit alongside practical skill.
We hope that clients leave believing they received honest advice.
We hope other contractors see value in thoughtful management.
And we hope future arborists inherit an industry where protecting trees is considered just as important as working on them.
If enough companies think this way, the cumulative effect on Britain's landscapes could be extraordinary.
We Are Stewards
The easiest job is often to cut the tree down.
The harder job is understanding whether you should.
We believe professionalism means choosing the harder path when it's the right one.
Because every mature tree removed unnecessarily is something that cannot be replaced within our lifetime.
And every good decision made today shapes the landscape that future generations inherit.
That responsibility belongs to all of us.
But for tree surgeons, it belongs especially to us.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Southfleet have a philosophy page?
Because we believe how a company thinks influences every decision it makes. Understanding our values helps clients understand why we often recommend different solutions from other contractors.
Do you really recommend against unnecessary work?
Yes. We regularly advise customers that trees can be retained through management rather than removal, even where this reduces the amount of work we undertake.
Why do you describe yourselves as stewards?
Because every decision made about a tree affects a wider landscape, its wildlife and future generations. We see our role as managing those decisions responsibly.
Isn't your job to remove trees?
No. Our job is to manage trees professionally. Sometimes that means removal. Often it means preservation, pruning or monitoring instead.
Why is ecology so important?
Trees support entire ecosystems. Professional tree surgery should consider wildlife, biodiversity and habitat alongside practical management.
Do you inspect for nesting birds?
Yes. Every project includes ecological considerations because protected birds may nest at any time of year.
Why invest in formal qualifications?
Understanding tree biology and arboriculture allows us to make better recommendations and provide advice that extends beyond simply carrying out work.
Why use battery powered equipment?
Where appropriate, battery equipment reduces noise and emissions while maintaining professional performance.
What does "Lead the Change" mean?
It reflects our belief that arboriculture can become more knowledgeable, more environmentally conscious and more focused on stewardship without compromising professionalism.
What do you ultimately want Southfleet to become?
We hope people look back and say:
"They are the professionals who showed every other company exactly how it should be done."
A Different Way of Thinking
If you're looking for the cheapest person with a chainsaw, we may not be the right fit.
If you're looking for experienced arboriculturists who will treat your trees, your money and your landscape with genuine care and professional judgement, we'd be delighted to help.
